When do Payroll Software Updates come out?
- CRA Payroll Updates typically come out twice annually – generally in January and then July – however, updates are possible at other times.
- It is important to ensure your updates are installed and applied correctly, as it is difficult & cumbersome to make any adjustments after the fact.
- It is strongly recommended to have the update installed before any payroll is processed.

Why is this tax table update important?
The taxation updates reflect the most recent payroll changes from the CRA including all the provinces’ tax rates.
The Sage development team then puts in all the work to ensure that any tax table updates and changes are implemented within Sage 300.

Answers to common questions about Sage Payroll updates
Q: Is ACCPAC the same as Sage 300?
A: Yes, ACCPAC was acquired many years ago by Sage and has become Sage 300.
Q: I have access to the payroll module in my Sage 300 software, can I just install the payroll update on my computer?
A: The payroll update needs to be installed uniformly on all computers where Sage software is installed. Under certain circumstances, product updates must be applied before applying the tax update. Q: When should I install the 2022 Sage 300 or Sage BusinessVision Payroll Update?
A: After the last payroll in December and before your first payroll run in January 2022, even though you may be paying employees for time worked in December.
Q: Should I backup before applying the update?
A: We recommend a full backup of the program directory and data before applying the update. Our process ensures we create this backup.
Q: Is there any documentation of what the 2022 update has?
A: Yes. As part of the process of the update, we provide documentation of the tax law changes.
Q. What should I do if I didn’t get the update installed before the first pay period in January 2022?
A. Install the update before the second pay period or as soon as possible. Take no other action – any discrepancies will be straightened out when your employees file their 2022 tax return, however they may receive an unexpected tax bill.
Q. I sometimes notice differences between the taxes calculated by Sage and the taxes I calculate using the manual tax tables. Why is this, and which figure is correct?
A. The Sage calculations are correct as they use exact formulas outlined in the tax laws, and published in by the CRA. Manual tables estimate tax deductions for a salary range, while the Sage BusinessVision formulas work with fractions of a cent. Also, manual tables ignore certain provincial allowances and deductions, and become obfuscated when irregular payments (like bonuses and commissions) are involved.
Q. Is there a warning prompt in Sage 300 about the update?
A. There are no warning prompts in Sage 300 regarding the tax tables.
What is the summary of January 2022 tax changes?
CRA has announced upcoming tax changes:
- Tax brackets are indexed to inflation – 2.4% increase from 2021
- Increases in most personal base tax deductions, deductions for caregiver and/or medical expenses, etc.
